The iconic powermonkey classic: a charging device that's become one of the most widely recognised and versatile portable chargers available on the market today.

Charge your smartphone, mobile, iPod/MP3 player, PDA, handheld games console, e-reader and other 5V devices in style.

The powermonkey classic was the first charger manufactured by Powertraveller in 2006, bringing a whole new meaning to the term "portable power". Negating the need for an array of different chargers and cables, its compact, lightweight design and charging capabilities quickly made it one of the most popular power solutions available on the market and the name "powermonkey" has become well recognised throughout the UK and Europe as an approved Apple accessory.

The powermonkey classic incorporates a lithium-Ion battery which can recharge a standard mobile phone fully up to three times (1.5 on a smartphone) before you'll need to recharge the powermonkey unit. It will also give you up to 40 hours of play time on your iPod, 48 hours on your PDA and up to 5 hours gaming on your handheld games console.

Weighing just 70 grams and measuring 88 x 39 x 37mm, powermonkey classic will work with any electronic device up to 5Volts and comes with a universal mains adaptor that works in over 150 countries around the world. Included with the powermonkey is a pack of adaptors (monkeynuts) for the leading mobile phone brands (including Sony-Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia and BlackBerry), as well as tips for other handheld gadgets such as iPod and Sony PSP.

The powermonkey classic portable charger can be recharged either by the included universal mains charger or via the retractable USB cable in the kit.

NOTE: To charge iPhone 5/5S/6 (with the 8-pin lightning connector), you will need to use the female USB adaptor that comes with the powermonkey classic and your Apple-supplied white sync / charge cable.

"There's nothing more irritating than your cellphone battery dying.  And it always happens when you're in the middle of an important conversation, or when your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, or at 3am after a night out when you need to phone a taxi.  No matter what it is - the death of your camera battery when you're about to take the best photo of your life, your iPod dying during your favourite song, or your GPS failing halfway through a roadtrip across the country - it's in these moments you wish you had a portable charger.

The powermonkey is an emergency power charger designed to help you through those moments.  It's an essential travel companion that provides portable power for your gadgets when you need it most.

The small device fits into your clutch or handbag and last about 10 times longer than normal batteries.  Each powermonkey comes with a tip pack with connectors for your iPod, most Sony Ericssons, BlackBerry, Samsung, Motorola, Nokia, as well as a tip for a USB charging cable, MICRO, MINI and female USBs and PSPs.

The maximum reserve power available on the powermonkey equals anout 1600 pictures for digital cameras, 96 hours [standby] for your phone and 40 hours for your iPod.  Let's face it, that's way longer than what normal chargers offer.  Just remember, the powermonkey-classic needs to be charged once in a while too..."

This is an all-in-one solution for all of your devices.  Charging is the name of the game for the powermonkey, but the options afforded for powering up the device itself are also impressive.  USB or international plug socket options makes this a great buy.

Offer a hefty charger for almost any portable device.

Prior to a recent trip to Egypt, I was offered the opportunity to test the powermonkey-classic and after reading the specs on this handy little gadget I enthusiastically accepted.

The powermonkey-classic  is a small and sleek portable charging device suitable for charging a range of electronic gadgets.

It looked great on paper and and was equally as impressive when tested.  In Egypt, I charged all my electronic devices over a two-week period without having to recharge the unit once.

It really is a handy and powerful little gadget.

Will the powermonkey classic, explorer or extreme charge my Iridium 9500 Sat Phone?

Unfortunately, the powermonkey classic and powermonkey explorer will not be a suitable accessory for the Iridium 9500. This phone is only rechargeable via a cigarette lighter socket. The solution would be to buy either a powermonkey extreme which now has a 12V output, a minigorilla plus female lighter socket or a powergorilla (female socket included). Both gorilla products would need to be set at 12V to recharge the Iridium phone.

The newer Iridium phones - 9505a and the 9555 - do have a DC in port and are therefore compatible with the powermonkey.

What is the difference between the powermonkey discovery and the powermonkey classic or powermonkey explorer?

The powermonkey discovery houses a 3500mAh lithium polymer battery. The powermonkey classic and powermonkey explorer house a 2200mAh lithium-ion battery.

Both the powermonkey discovery and powermonkey classic are neither water-resistant nor waterproof - the powermonkey explorer is water-resistant.

If I am not going to use my monkey or gorilla charger for a while, is it best to store it with a charge remaining?

Yes.  If you plan to store your gorilla or monkey portable charger for a long period of time without use, it should be stored with at least 60% charge remaining.  This helps keeps the internal battery in good condition.

Where can I purchase additional powermonkey tips?

Please use our online tip selector to find the appropriate tip for your device.

Will the solarmonkey work with my powermonkey classic?

Yes, you can charge your powermonkey classic using the solarmonkey.  We do not recommend using third party solar panels with any of our products.

How do I know when my powermonkey classic is running low on power?

The flashing green LED will turn red and flash to signify that the powermonkey needs recharging.

How can I recharge my powermonkey classic?

You can recharge the powermonkey from the mains or via USB (all included in the pack), or you can purchase a solarmonkey solar panel separately.

The powermonkey classic will not charge my camera - Why?

Digital cameras are one of the most awkward devices to get to work with third party chargers.  Some digital cameras can only be charged if you have to remove the battery to charge it and generally do not have a DC-in socket.  If this is the case, the powermonkey will not be compatible.  If the camera has a DC-in port - usually a round pin - then the powermonkey should POWER it.  It is rare that a camera will accept a charge from this port so the powermonkey will act as an external battery instead.

Is the powermonkey classic available in different colours?

The powermonkey classic is currently available in Black, Blue and Silver.

Why does my device say it is still charging when the powermonkey remains connected, even though the powermonkey is switched off?

There is a small amount of residual power in the tail of the powermonkey.  This may cause your device to recognise the powermonkey and display that it is still charging.  Please disconnect the powermonkey classic, this will then prevent the powermonkey from being drained.
