Blackburn Crew

Polar adventurers

solargorilla

The Blackburn2014 team consists of four athletes from various backgrounds, all living in Munich, Germany.
They have known each other for a long time and now decided to start this awesome project coming up in 2014. Coming from all different kind of sport backgrounds, like kitesurfing, speedflying and alpine climbing, there is a common passion for extreme outdoor adventures. Combining all of these skills the team will set for new limits!

Since Sebastian could barely walk, he was already in touch with sports. At the age of three he took on skiing. Three years later, Sebastian had his first experiences with water-sports and learned sailing. After racing skiffs for several years, he switched over to yacht-sailing and windsurfing. One day he saw the first kitesurfers on his homespot. From that day on he knew that he had to learn this sport, no matter the cost. Five years later he became German Freestyle Champion. In 2004 and 2005 Sebastian won the Junior Freestyle World Championships in snow kiting. In 2007 he became German Snowkite Champion and in 2011 he became German Vice Champion.

Philip credits his love of extreme sports with his parents both being physical education teachers and their enthusiasm about sports. At the age of three he was already on the way to become a professional swimmer, but after several championships he eventually retired of this solo sport. His passion for mountaineering and climbing drew him to study in Switzerland. There he switched to air- and other adrenaline sports activities such as big mountain skiing and snowboarding, in which he is now able to do backflips and corked jumps.

Andreas got in contact with the mountains and mountaineering very early in his life since his mother comes from a little town in Tirol in the middle of the Austrian Alps. His uncle was one of the pioneer-climbers at the Wilder Kaiser. Besides showing him the perfect spots and teaching techniques, his uncle taught him what climbing and mountaineering really means: Responsibility for the nature and yourself, to know your limits and getting to the edge of them. With this in his mind Andreas was always looking out for new adventures, from the Swiss Alps to the volcanic rocks on the Cape Verde Islands. Beeing a pioneer himself one day was always a driving force. In medical school he met Samuel Stotz and since this time the two of them, having a similar view of the alpine mountaineering sport and complementing one another perfectly regarding their skills, they very successfully tour together.

*NEW* mini-g

Adventurer Annelie Pompe believes adventure is more about attitude than adrenaline. Anything can be an adventure. She also believes that the greatest adventure of all is not at the summit, or at depth - it is inside of ourselves.

Annelie is a world champion freediver and a climber. She feels as home at the bottom of the sea as on the top of a mountain or on a rock face. Amongst her achievements is a world record freedive to 126m in one breath, as well as being the first Swedish woman to summit Everest from the north side.

Ryan Waters is an American mountaineer, guide, and polar adventurer. He is the owner of the international guide service Mountain Professionals. In 2014, he became the first American to complete the Adventures Grand Slam, by climbing the Seven Summits and skiing full, unsupported trips to the North and South Pole.

He has guided all of the Seven Summits on several occasions and has either guided or personally climbed 5 different 8000 meter mountains including Everest (2 times), Manaslu (3 times), Lhotse (2 times), Cho Oyu (2 times), and Broad Peak. He has also attempted K2, Gasherbrum II, and Dhaulagiri.  Ten times reaching 8000 meter summits.

A team unsupported West to East ski traverse of Greenland expanded his interests into the polar regions. In January 2010, Ryan and Cecilie Skog completed a "nice long ski tour" in Antarctica. The team skied 1,117 miles/1,800 kilometers over 70 days from Berkner Island in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf to the South Pole, then continued to the Ross Sea and set a new record by completing the first ski traverse of Antarctica without resupplies or the use of kites.

He and fellow explorer Eric Larsen reached the North Pole on May 4, 2014 after skiing unsupported for 53 days from Cape Discovery, Canada. This expedition was made into a 2-hour documentary titled Melting: Last Race to the Pole, for Animal Planet television network. In September 2015 he and Larsen also made the first ascent of 6,166m Jabou Ri in the Rolwaling area of Nepal.

Ryno is a super-passionate mountaineer and trail runner.  He has climbed various mountains in Africa, Europe and Nepal.  He currently holds the record for the Hobbit 100km mountain run after back to back wins in 2012 and 2013.

He has raced Adventure Racing internationally with Team Cyanosis since 2006 with various top finishes.  Race destinations include Africa, Europe, New Zealand, 800km in the Moab Desert in Utah and 10 days amongst the icebergs of Patagonia.

Ryno actively competes on the Rogaine World Champs circuit (pair - 24 hour navigation runs) with Nicholas Mulder.  They achieved a 2nd place at the New Zealand Championships in 2010 and a top 5 finish at the Czech World Championships in 2012.

His true passion, however, remains spending time in the mountains and sharing it with others.

His competitive side sees him combine his experience gained in the altitude and technical rope work of mountaineering, the managing of sleep deprivation and team dynamics in Adventure Racing, the navigation of Rogaine and the technical aspect and speed of trail running to tackle FKT (Fastest Known Times) in self-sufficient mountain running.

Ryno set a new world record in March 2014 with Ryan Sandes in a Red Bull project to cover the 210km Drakensberg Grand Traverse (DGT) in a time of 41 hours and 49 minutes with only 40 minutes of sleep (the previous record was 60 hours 29 minutes).  During the DGT, the team from Salomon summited the six highest peaks south of Kilimanjaro.

Ryno is also a qualified Chartered Accountant, registered independent auditor, tax practitioner and and co-founder of the international height safety group Gravity Training.

Ryno is passionate about reinvesting in the sport and manages a portfolio of up and coming athletes and regularly presents motivational talks in sport and business sharing his adventures.  He believes that a person learns more about themselves in a 5 day expedition / adventure race than a normal person will in 5 years.

Long-Distance Hikers

*NEW* extreme

The Wandering La Vignes consist of married couple Patrice and Justin La Vigne, who've been trekking together since 2002 and have more than 12,000 trail miles between them.

As big national park fans, they've already explored more than 40 with a goal to visit all 59.  Their mission to climb the highest peak in all 50 states is around the corner with less than 7 to go.

Unconstrained by borders, their expeditions have taken them to far-flung sites like New Zealand, where they covered 2,000+ miles on Te Araroa, a trail that spans the length of the country.  On that 4-month trek, Justin carried the Powertraveller solarmonkey adventurer charger strapped to his backpack every day through a variety of terrain.

Patrice and Justin will continue their adventures with the help of one of our new chargers - the extreme.
